PEDRO ADVÍNCULA (VILLALPARDO)
The church of
Villalpardo is located in the centre of this town in the southeast of Cuenca
and it tands out for its strong stone façade.
It is called the
Parish Church of San Pedro Advíncula (Saint Peter in chains). It remembers the
biblical story when an angel freed the apostle Saint Peter from the chains that
Herod Agrippa used to imprison him. It dates from the 16th–17th centuries.
It is a religious
building with a rectangular plan and only one nave. It is built with masonry
and ashlar stone in the corners, and its roof is a barrel vault along the whole
nave, with lunettes in the openings.
Inside, there is a square chapel with a groin vault, which you enter
through a semicircular arch. On its main altar there is a Baroque altarpiece.
Outside, the entrance is simple, with a lowered arch between two
buttresses and a small roof. It has a bell gable with three openings made of
stone blocks, with pilasters and a curved cornice, also in stone.
Finally, the
parish is an active centre in the local life of Villalpardo and it is home to
different brotherhoods that take part in the town’s religious celebrations: the
brotherhood of Jesús Nazareno, the brotherhood of the Virgin Dolorosa, the
brotherhood of Saint Anthony of Padua and the brotherhood of Saint Christopher.
The church gives its name to the local festival of the town, celebrated
on 1 August, in honour of its patron saint, Saint Peter.
Without doubt, it is a place worth visiting, not only for its cultural
interest but also for its architectural value.

L’église de Villalpardo est située au cœur
de cette localité du sud-est de la province de Cuenca et se distingue par sa
robuste façade en Pierre. Elle est connue sous le nom d’église paroissiale de
San Pedro Advíncula (Saint Pierre enchaîné). Elle commémore l’épisode biblique
au cours duquel un ange libère l’apôtre Saint Pierre des chaînes dans
lesquelles l’avait fait emprisonner Hérode Agrippa. L’édifice date des XVIᵉ et
XVIIᵉ siècles.Il s’agit d’un édifice religieux de plan rectangulaire à nef
unique. Sa construction est en maçonnerie, avec des pierres de taille aux
angles, et la couverture est une voûte en berceau sur toute la nef, avec des
lunettes au niveau des ouvertures. À l’intérieur se trouve une chapelle de plan
carré, couverte d’une voûte d’arêtes, à laquelle on accède par un arc en plein
cintre. Le maître-autel est orné d’un retable baroque. À l’extérieur, le
portail est simple, composé d’un arc surbaissé encadré par deux contreforts et
surmonté d’un petit auvent. L’église possède un clocher-mur à trois baies,
construit en pierre de taille, flanqué de pilastres et couronné d’une corniche
courbe, également en pierre. Enfin, il convient de souligner que la paroisse
est un centre actif de la vie locale de Villalpardo et le siège de diverses
confréries qui participent aux célébrations religieuses du village : la
confrérie de Jesús de Nazareno, celle de la Virgen Dolorosa , la confrérie de
San Antonio de Padua et celle de San Cristobal. L’église donne son nom à la
fête locale de la commune, célébrée le 1ᵉʳ août en l’honneur de son saint
patron, Saint Pierre. Il
s’agit sans aucun doute d’un lieu qui mérite d’être visité, non seulement pour
son intérêt culturel, mais aussi pour sa valeur architecturale.
