SANCTUARY OF OUR LADY OF CONSOLATION
The Consolación Sanctuary is located in a natural area of about 70 hectares, surrounded by Mediterranean pine forests and typical local bushes. Although it belongs to the town of Iniesta (Cuenca), it is very close to other towns, including Villalpardo, Villarta and El Herrumblar.
The land is limestone, which helps many springs and fountains appear in the area.
Devotion to the Virgin of Consolación in Iniesta dates back to the 16th century, when the image arrived in the area. The origins of the pilgrimage in her honour go back to 1603, when the first licence was requested to celebrate a yearly fair in this place.
During the pilgrimage, celebrated every year on Pentecost Sunday, the Virgin leaves the parish church of Iniesta and goes to the sanctuary. On the way there is a traditional stop at the “Humilladero” of Villarta to rest, eat, drink and talk. The return to Iniesta takes place on the second-to-last Sunday of August.
It has a dressing room behind the presbytery, which is typical in Marian sanctuaries.
The nave and transept have a barrel vault with lunettes, and the dressing room and transept are finished with a dome on pendentives.
At the main entrance there is a small bell gable, and inside there are wall paintings that show biblical and symbolic images connected with the Virgin’s litanies.
The main altarpiece, in Baroque style, has three sections and three vertical divisions with spiral columns and a central window where the image of the Virgin is placed.
Besides the sanctuary, the area includes traditional buildings such as the 18th-century Hospedería with a columned courtyard, the Perlica Fountain, the washhouse, Casa Sevilla and Casa del Mayordomo, all of great ethnographic value.
Without doubt, it is an ideal destination to combine cultural visits with nature and local traditions.
