THE OLD WELL
In the town of Villalpardo, in the province of Cuenca, there is a recreation of what the old well used to look like.
According to historical studies and archaeological findings of Celtiberian and Roman pottery, the area was a stopping point for travellers for many centuries. There was one important road that crossed the Cabriel River, first using a narrow crossing (called the "Old Bridge") and later a more developed bridge. There was also a kind of station where horses were changed.
The well had stones with many grooves, probably caused by the continuous use of ropes. Near it stood a very large elm tree that provided shade and shelter for travellers and carriages. Its water came from underground and may even have been connected to other nearby wells, although it was not always good quality for drinking.
Later, both the elm tree and the surrounding area began to deteriorate: the tree became sick and was cut down because it was dangerous, and the well was eventually filled in. Over time, the place changed further: a small chapel was built with basins and a water trough for animals, although the trough was broken in an accident.
In short, it is an interesting place to visit because it was once an important point for travel and social life.
ANCIEN PUITS
Dans la localité de Villalpardo, dans la province de Cuenca, nous trouvons une reconstitution de ce qu’était l’ancien puits.
Selon des études historiques et des découvertes archéologiques de céramiques celtibères et romaines, la zone fut un lieu de passage depuis des siècles. Il existait un seul chemin important qui traversait la rivière Cabriel, d’abord par un passage étroit (« Puente vieja »), puis par un pont plus développé. On y trouvait également une sorte de relais où l’on changeait les chevaux.
Le puits possédait des pierres avec de nombreuses entailles, probablement causées par l’usage continu de cordes. À proximité se dressait un grand orme de dimensions considérables, qui offrait de l’ombre et servait de refuge aux voyageurs et aux charrettes. Son eau était souterraine et pouvait même être en communication avec d’autres puits voisins, bien qu’elle ne fût pas toujours de bonne qualité pour la consommation humaine.
Plus tard, tant l’orme que les environs se détériorèrent: l’arbre tomba malade et fut abattu en raison du risque de chute, et le puits finit par être comblé. De plus, avec le temps, le lieu fut modifié: une chapelle avec des bassins et un abreuvoir pour les animaux fut construite, bien que ce dernier se soit brisé lors d’un accident.
En définitive, il s’agit d’un lieu intéressant à visiter, ayant été un point de passage et de rencontre.
INVENCIBLE THEATRE
The theatre company La Invencible is a cultural treasure of Villalpardo. This company began its activity in 1946, with occasional interruptions, but it has always kept the same name, which refers to the idea that theatre will never disappear, no matter how much the world changes. In fact, they usually perform one or two plays each year and have managed to remain active over the decades. They are a group that dares to work with a wide variety of genres, from comedy and tragedy to drama and musicals, having staged more than one hundred productions.
In its early years, theatre performances coincided with the celebration of Saint Mark’s Day and were held in a wine cellar, where the stage was set up.
The company’s first director was Pedro Cerdán, who premiered several productions, including a three-act play and two sainetes (short comic plays): Forgiveness Through Revenge, The Royal Gala, and The Weaker Sex.
Currently, Librado Carrasco Cerdán is the company’s director, a role to which he has dedicated approximately 30 years. He has adapted plays and has even written some works that the company has later performed.
Today, theatre is experiencing a new period of growth and renewed public interest. Therefore, La Invencible offers us the wonderful opportunity to enjoy dramatic art in a rural setting.
THÉÂTRE LA INVENCIBLE
La compagnie de théâtre La Invencible est un trésor de la culture de Villalpardo. Cette compagnie a commencé son activité en 1946, avec quelques pauses au cours des années, mais elle a toujours gardé le même nom. Ce nom signifie que le théâtre ne disparaîtra jamais, même si le monde change. En général, ils présentent une ou deux pièces chaque année et ils ont réussi à continuer leurs activités pendant de nombreuses années.
C’est un groupe qui ose jouer des genres très différents : des comédies, des tragédies, des drames et aussi des comédies musicales. Grâce à cela, ils ont présenté plus de cent œuvres.
Au début, les représentations de théâtre avaient lieu pendant la fête de Saint Marc et elles se faisaient dans une cave où l’on installait la scène.
Le premier directeur de la compagnie était Pedro Cerdán. Il a présenté plusieurs œuvres, parmi lesquelles une pièce de théâtre en trois actes et deux saynètes : El perdón por la venganza, La real gala et El sexo débil.
Aujourd’hui, Librado Carrasco Cerdán est le directeur de la compagnie depuis environ 30 ans. Il a adapté plusieurs œuvres et il a aussi écrit quelques pièces que la compagnie a représentées.
Actuellement, le théâtre connaît une nouvelle période de succès et le public montre beaucoup d’intérêt. Grâce à cela, la compagnie La Invencible nous offre la magnifique opportunité de profiter de l’art dramatique dans le monde rural.
